HERITGE OTTAWA
Ottawa Architects 150 is an ambitious project to document the history of the practice of architecture in Ottawa from 1867 to 2017.
The core of the project is the “family tree” of architectural practices dating back to Confederation. To date, more than 500 architectural practices have been identified along with 574 principals/partners and 1291 buildings designed by those firms. A collection more than 1,000 photographs has been assembled.
Despite this mass of information, there remains a general lack of knowledge about architectural practices from the 1950s to 1980s.
Local architects, heritage enthusiasts and members of the general public are invited to contribute their knowledge by visiting the project's newly launched website at ottawaarchitects150.ca .
Many of the photographs assembled to date are posted on Flickr. The project also has its own Facebook page .
At the conclusion of the project in 2017 the website will be converted to a permanent resource in celebration of Canada's Sequicentennial, serving as a lasting recognition of the contribution of local architects to the development of Canada’s capital city.
The project is spearheaded by Rick MacEwen, architect and partner in the firm Watson MacEwen Teramura Architects whose specialties include heritage conservation projects.More more information, see this previous article on our website or contact Rick MacEwen at ottawaarchitects150@gmail.com.
