HERITAGE OTTAWA

Today is an historic National Indigenous Peoples Day for Ottawa. On this day, the City established the permanent presence at City Hall of the flags of the Algonquin Anishinabeg National Tribal Council and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.

Heritage Ottawa was honoured to have been invited to witness this important and moving event. Guests of honour included Mayor Jim Watson, Grand Chief Verna Polson and Chief Kirby Whiteduck. We were welcomed by Elder Rose Wawatie Beaudoin of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council, and Elder Aimee Bailey of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.

This event marks the City of Ottawa's commitment to the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, especially important here in Ottawa because we are on the traditional and unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinabeg peoples.
