HERITAGE OTTAWA, By Mark Brandt and Carolyn Quinn
Heritage Ottawa is pleased to share this remarkable video tribute that celebrates the contributions of eight heritage conservation "Pioneers" in the National Capital Region (NCR). The Local Conference Committee of the Joint APT / National Trust Conference 2017, Ottawa, sought to create a strong statement about how the National Capital Region has been a “hotbed” of conservation activity in Canada as both a main hub for conservation training, and a key player in the development of North American preservation policies and practice. Canada’s Capital Region has much history in conservation and today remains a leading global location of preservation projects and education.
To help celebrate this achievement, the conference committee sought to present the stories of some of the NCR’s trailblazers who, through significant contributions in the early days of the heritage preservation movement and their strong roles locally, nationally and internationally, have paved the way, toiling in what was once described as “the good fight.” Thanks in part to their contributions, heritage conservation no longer has to prove its worth in economic, environmental and socio-cultural value. Heritage Ottawa joins the Joint APT / National Trust Conference Committee in saluting their generosity, intelligence and leadership.
Several of these local heroes played important roles as leaders and contributors to the success of Heritage Ottawa. People like our co-founder Bob Phillips, and Paul Stumes, Susan Buggey and Ann Falkner, all active members of our board of directors over the years.
The video was created by Francois LeBlanc. The narrator is Claude Charbonneau. The tribute will be “live” at the conference in the Westin, October 11 to 14, and at the Closing Celebration on October 14th.
