HERITAGE OTTAWA
Jane's Walk is a weekend festival of free neighbourhood walking tours throughout Ottawa, led by locals who care passionately about where they live, work and play. Tours offer insights into local history, planning, design and civic engagement through the simple act of walking and observing.
Jane's Walk began in Toronto in May 2007, quickly spread to other cities including Ottawa in 2008, and is now a global event.
The event takes its name from the late urban activist Jane Jacobs, born 100 years ago today on May 4, 1916. Jane Jacobs had a profound influence on the way we regard urban space, urban life and urban infrastructure. Her groundbreaking ideas that began in the 1960s are more relevant than ever, often regarded as common sense by today's architects and planners.
The 2016 edition of Jane's Walk Ottawa features a multitude of walks in both English and French.
This year's walks include the Byward Market: Inside Stories of Heritage Conservation, The Civic Hospital and the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa's Historic Financial District, and many more.
