Heritage Ottawa Annual General Meeting
Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 7:00 PM, Scotton Hall
Glebe Community Centre, 175 Third Avenue, Ottawa
Special Lecture: Shanghai Art Deco
Guest Speaker: Ian Ferguson
Come explore the glory and splendour of Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s, a cosmopolitan city partially under international administration. The presentation explores why Shanghai counts among the cities with the largest number of Art Deco buildings in the world and looks at examples of hotels, department stores, cinemas, private residences and public buildings. The talk will situate Art Deco within the growing Chinese interest at that period in Western concepts of luxury, nightlife, cinema, graphic art, fashion and furniture. Now part of China’s heritage, Shanghai’s Art Deco architecture also asserts itself in the overall history of modern architecture while paying tribute to the Chinese and foreign architects and workers involved.
Ian Ferguson is a former Canadian diplomat who served in a variety of regions including Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and the United Nations. Following retirement, he obtained his M.A. in Art History from Carleton University in 2014. He now works as an independent scholar and curator while volunteering as docent at the National Gallery of Canada. He is a member of the Board of Heritage Ottawa, and has attended a number of World Art Deco Congresses (Montreal, Shanghai, Cleveland). Last year, he curated an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives on the multiples of the German artist Joseph Beuys. He has authored articles for the online National Gallery Magazine and the Journal of Canadian Art History.
We hope that you and your guest will be able to join us for an enjoyable evening.
