A Future for St. Brigid’s Centre for the Arts: Heritage Ottawa Part of Leaders Table

Tuesday, October 18, 2022

Heritage Ottawa is pleased to be part of a ''leaders table'' established under the auspices of Councillor Mathieu Fleury that includes representatives of the Lowertown Community Association, Lucille Collard (MPP for Ottawa-Vanier) and Mona Fortier (MP for Ottawa-Vanier).

Heritage Ottawa was part of the original 2006 ''Save Saint Brigid's'' campaign that resulted in the 2007 sale of the heritage designated property by the Archdiocese of Ottawa to the National Irish Canadian Cultural Centre.

“The community leaders table is forming as the property is in dire need of a renewed vision,” states the group’s media release. The group’s objective is to retain the historic site while working with the City, other levels of government, and the private sector to find viable ways of adapting the landmark Lowertown building to a new use.

Ottawa has many excellent examples of church spaces being preserved and rehabilitated for new functional requirements: All Saints on Laurier Avenue, St. Charles on Beechwood, St. Clements on Mann Avenue and Dominion Chalmers on Cooper Street, to name a few.

“Heritage Ottawa is committed to help develop a renewed vision and an appropriate adaptive reuse for the property as a publicly accessible site while preserving its heritage designation,’’ said Heritage Ottawa spokesperson David Flemming.
