DISCOVER RUSKIN PLACE

Suburban land development in Canadian cities prior to World War Two followed very different patterns compared to post war developments.  This tour will explore the long, and often unsuccessful, history of the Ottawa Land Association’s attempts to sell building lots in Ottawa’s western suburbs. The tour will focus on the southern half of the OLA’s property -- an area bounded by what is now the Queensway to the north and Carling Avenue to the south and stretching between Parkdale Avenue on the east and Island Park Drive to the west. Marketed to potential buyers as Ruskin Place in the 1930s, this area reflects important themes in the history of Canadian suburban development and features a high concentration of houses of heritage significance.
