MODERN LOWERTOWN
NEW TOUR: Lowertown East includes several prominent examples of housing constructed after urban renewal in the 1960s and 1970s cleared entire city blocks and displaced 1,500 predominately francophone families from the neighbourhood. The replacement homes take many forms and generate many stories. Today, several Ottawa Community Housing structures resulting from this social experiment are recognized for their architectural design and their historical value.
This tour will highlight the area's architecture, with its buildings reflecting a variety of mid-century modern influences, and its history, with its complex narrative of people and events that reshaped the neighbourhood.
