Colonel By not only supervised building the Rideau Canal, but also the layout and naming of Bytown's streets and the erection of buildings and structures to support canal construction and supply via the Ottawa River. Along the walking route are numerous monuments that celebrate By's six years in Ottawa and his great canal achievement.
