STUART LAZEAR -- A LIFE DEDICATED TO HERITAGE

HERITAGE OTTAWA

Heritage Ottawa is delighted to report that Stuart Lazear, a lifetime member of our organization, was honoured on Heritage Day, February 17 with the Louise & Eric Moore Award for Outstanding Volunteerism in Heritage, presented by Mayor Sutcliffe.

Born in Ottawa and raised in Sandy Hill, Stuart developed an early fascination with historic architecture found in many of Ottawa's core neighbourhoods. That early curiosity grew into a lifelong career dedicated to heritage conservation.

Stuart has spent over 40 years committed to the preservation of built heritage at the commiunity, municipal, provincial and federal levels as a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners. He served for over two decades as Coordinator of Heritage Planning Services for the City of Ottawa, leading efforts to protect and manage the city's built heritage. His early years working as a city planner took him to Regina, Alberta Culture, and the Main Street Canada Program, before returning to Ottawa. He has authored technical guides, taught at Carleton University and Algonquin College, and served as a judge for several heritage awards.

Stuart holds degrees from McGill and the University of British Columbia.

Heritage Ottawa is very grateful for all the help Stuart has selflessly provided over the years and we believe it is most fitting that his efforts have been recognized with this award.
