Heritage Ottawa has been advocating for the rehabilitation of the Classified Federal Heritage Building for a number of years. More recently, in October 2025 Heritage Ottawa wrote to PM Mark Carney urging a timely solution on the future of 24 Sussex preferably restored imaginatively to serve as the prime minister's residence.
"It is tragic that 24 Sussex has been allowed to deteriorate. The National Capital Commission has recently stabilized the structure, but a political decision concerning the future of 24 Sussex needs to be made," wrote president Spencer-Ross. "Heritage Ottawa advocates for conservation of this building... Good heritage conservation allows for buildings to be upgraded and evolve... there is great scope for imaginative and creative rehabilitation," the letter continues.
24 Sussex Drive makes up part of a suite of buildings designed in the Gothic Revival Style erected at the time of Confederation. The house is located in one of the most dramatic and iconic landscapes in Canada that speaks to the creation of our nation.
