FROM WALK-UP TO HIGH-RISE: 4TH PRINTING

HERITAGE OTTAWA

Heritage Ottawa is pleased to announce that our publication From Walk-Up to High-Rise: Ottawa's Historic Apartment Buildings is now in its fourth printing. A shipment of fresh copies has been delivered to our office.

Interest in this book on heritage apartments in downtown Ottawa has remained constant since it was first published in 2017. Covering the timeframe from 1900 to 1975, the book tells the story of how apartment living emerged in 20th century Ottawa. Focusing on Centretown, Sandy Hill and Lowertown East, it looks at the demographic and economic pressures that helped shape these new housing forms, the entrepreneurs and designers who created them, and the people who lived in them.

You will meet Ottawa builders like Wolf Shenkman, Sam Berger and Bill Teron and the architects they hired to design their buildings--including Cecil Burgess and Werner Noffke in the early 1900s, and Morris Woolfson and Peter Dickinson in the mid-20th century--who all left an indelible mark on the city.

You'll learn how three-storey "walk-ups" evolved into the "Grandes Dames" inspired by the Queen Anne Revival Style as seen in The Shefford and The Strathcona, which in turn led to modernist high-rises epitomized by The Juliana and Park Square.

The book's text is enhanced by beautiful colour photographs throughout. The appendices include maps and references.

The publication helps fulfill part of Heritage Ottawa's mandate to raise awareness about the value of Ottawa's built heritage. The price of $30 per copy (includes shipping) encourages its purchase for personal edification, or to give as a gift for readers interested in the heritage architecture of our city.
