HERITAGE OTTAWA

Heritage Ottawa's Leslie Maitland appeared on CTV NEWS OTTAWA this morning to discuss two local heritage structures each facing a critical crossroads.

The latest design iteration of a proposed addition to the Château Laurier still lacks visual compatibility with the national historic site, one of the criteria of a conditional heritage permit granted last spring under the Ontario Heritage Act by the City of Ottawa, says Heritage Ottawa.

In an effort to move forward with the restoration and rehabilitation of 24 Sussex Drive, Heritage Ottawa recently sent a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau suggesting the appointment of an all-party committee, headed by a non-partisan Chair, to make recommendations regarding the the building's future.  As only the exterior stone shell and setting of the building are designated, Ms. Maitland pointed out the possibility of combining historic preservation with modern updates. The result could be a model of green rehabiliation, she said.
