HERITAGE OTTAWA

Carleton University’s School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies is hosting a free symposium, HERITAGE IN REVERSE: Material Values, Waste and Deconstruction, to be held October 26 – 27, 2018.

The theme of heritage conservation and architectural waste grew out of case studies that examined how heritage values were being considered in sustainable rehabilitation projects. Questions emerged about how heritage policies and practices have tended to not only ignore issues of material waste, but often contribute to its creation.  HERITAGE IN REVERSE will be looking at alternative approaches that consider broader ethical perspectives associated with salvage and reuse.

The Symposium opens with a free public lecture on Friday, October 26 at 7:00 pm. “Architecture in the Circular Economy: Reclaiming Building Resources,” with guest lecturer Mark Gorgolewski of Ryerson University and author of Resource Salvation: The Architecture of Reuse, will be held in the Auditorium/Lobby of the Tory Building, Carleton University. Pre-registration is required.

On Saturday, HERITAGE IN REVERSE offers a full, day-long program (9:00 am – 5:30 pm) bringing together individuals and organizations active in related areas of heritage conservation, urban, architectural and construction history, critical heritage and discard studies, building deconstruction, and sustainable materials and waste management to address the relationship between heritage and waste and the gaps that exist between conservation theories and practice.  The program includes a downtown walking tour (pre-registration required) and sessions on Site Lessons, Recent Research, and Policy Contexts held at Carleton University’s Dunton Tower, Room 2017.

The event will include accomplished scholars and graduate students from Canada and the United States as well as professional and industry practitioners. The overarching objectives are to foster an open exchange and build a community of discussion.

The Symposium is free and includes lunch, but seating is limited. CLICK HERE for further information and Pre-Registration.
