HERITAGE OTTAWA
Heritage Ottawa's new Lecture Series is off to a flying start.
Our season-opening talk by Robert Smythe, author of the popular blog Urbsite, presented the evolution of Ottawa's postwar apartment buildings from 1945 to 1975. Questions from the audience following the well-illustrated presentation evidenced a high degree of interest in both the speaker and this popular topic.
Smythe is one of several contributors to Heritage Ottawa's forthcoming new book publication on Ottawa's Apartment Buildings, expected in spring 2017.
Last week's Emerging Scholars presentation featured three recent graduates of Architecture, Art History and Interior Design programs at Algonquin College, University of Waterloo and Carleton University.
Yasaman Tehrani, graduate of Algonquin's Interior Design program, addressed principles of accessibility, functionality, aesthetics and sustainability in the presentation of her student project, a proposed design for the interior of the National Art Centre's Southam Hall.
Jessie Gamarra's presentation of post-war school design in Ontario focused on her case studies of public schools in Ottawa, Nepean and Toronto's Don Mills. Gamarra recently completed the Honours BA program at Carleton University, where she is currently a Master's student in Art History.
Michelle Duong, graduate of the University of Waterloo's School of Architecture and more recently Carleton University, explored the daily challenges of servant life at Laurier House and Munross Mansion during the days of former Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King.
Attendees were impressed by the professional quality of all three presentations and by the poise displayed by the speakers. All appear set for bright futures in their respective fields.
Heritage Ottawa extends a warm thanks to our speakers for their engaging presentations.
We welcome you to join us at our next lecture to be held on November 16, examining the remarkable engineering of The Diefenbunker: Cold War Fortress.
Our next lecture begins at 7pm at the Ottawa Public Library, located at Laurier and Metcalfe Streets. All lectures are free.
