HERITAGE OTTAWA | MEDIA RELEASE
Heritage Ottawa has retained legal representation in its ongoing efforts to protect the Château Laurier from a proposed inappropriate addition. Heritage Ottawa, with the support of the volunteer national advocacy group Friends of the Château Laurier, today launched a fundraising campaign asking Canadians to help support its legal challenges.
Heritage Ottawa has retained Gowling WLG (Michael S. Polowin) and co-counsel Marc Denhez of the former Ontario Municipal Board. They will advise Heritage Ottawa on all legal options for consideration as the Château Laurier saga unfolds.
“Heritage Ottawa has been spurred on in our efforts to prevent the desecration of the most iconic building in Ottawa next to the Parliament Buildings by the thousands of people who have spoken out against the proposed design,” said president Richard Belliveau. “People from across the country have been contacting Heritage Ottawa and the Friends group asking us not to give up on this beloved site.”
Heritage Ottawa, with the help of the Friends of the Château Laurier, has launched this fundraising campaign to direct people to where they can make a tax-deductible donation in support of our legal efforts.
The Château Laurier is a National Historic Site of Canada and one of Ottawa’s architectural gems. There has been a groundswell of public opinion and expert analysis by renowned professionals urging the building owners to reconsider.
Heritage Ottawa is committed to preventing a design which denigrates rather than enhances the Château Laurier, and its unique symbolic place in the magnificent Canadian landscape.
