HERITAGE OTTAWA

Last November, Liberal MP John Aldag tabled Petition E-1778 (National Historic Sites) calling upon the Minister of Environment and Climate Change to work with the Minister of Finance to ensure substantial funding to support the efforts of Indigenous peoples, charities, and not-for-profits to save and renew historic places, and encourage private sector investment and heritage philanthropy.

Yesterday, January 16, 2019, the federal government responded to the petition.

The response includes a reminder that the Department of Finance is currently conducting pre-budget consultations, and that recommendations made in the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development’s report Preserving Canada’s Heritage: the Foundation for Tomorrow “are welcome and appreciated.” The response concludes that “Parliament will determine the final spending plans and annual economic policy statement for the upcoming year based on a series of economic, social and political factors, which would include any proposed tax changes as necessary.”
