From the President …..

Welcome to 2012!

Our Disappearing Heritage: The Groundwood Pulp Mill at the Chaudière Falls

Heritage Ottawa was alarmed to discover that less than a week ago, demolition began on one of the remaining buildings at the Chaudière/Victoria Island complex.

Domtar buildings

The Groundwood Pulp Mill is located on Booth Street, on land leased by Domtar from Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC). While its demolition is technically subject to National Capital Commission (NCC) approval, we have come to learn that the NCC was not made aware of the demolition until after it began. According to the City of Ottawa, the demolition permit was issued almost ten years ago.

I’ll address only Section 37 benefits with respect to heritage, as others will speak to other potential benefits.

Heritage Ottawa responds to latest design proposal for Horticulture Building at Lansdowne

Under the proposed Lansdowne Park redevelopment, the Horticulture Building is being re-located, outfitted with a new glass entranceway on one end, and even shortened somewhat. In the words of president Leslie Maitland: “This is a reasonable compromise.”...

Justice Annex Building Heritage Ottawa supports the position of the Centretown Citizens Community Association regarding the deconstruction of the Justice Annex building. Designated as a Recognized building by the Federal Heritage Building Review Office, the Justice Annex is the last remaining of the temporary buildings constructed in the National Capital Region during the 1940s to house an expanded wartime public service. Built entirely of wood, including old-growth cedar, the Justice Annex is representative of the ‘temporaries’ that were constructed across the country.

55 MacKay Street, New Edinburgh Heritage Conservation District -- Heritage Ottawa has been contacted by some residents near 55 MacKay St. in the New Edinburgh Heritage Conservation District (HCD), who are concerned about the proposed rezoning to allow its use as offices by the diplomatic mission of Vietnam. Heritage Ottawa does not consider the purchase of the building or the proposal to change its use to diplomatic offices to be a threat to the house as a heritage resource or to the HCD.
