Heritage vs Safety

So what do you think?

This morning on CBC Radio's Ottawa Monrning, Robyn Bresnahan spoke with the lawyer for the Group Claude Lauzon.  The developer owns a building that was once a Catholic girls school in Lowertown but now sits surrounded by a fence, to protect people from falling debris.

Lauzon says it's unsafe to enter and wants to demolish it.

But Robyn also spoke to Arlene Gregoire, Ottawa's director of building code about why the city is not letting the demolition go ahead.  Listen to the conversation here.

As noted previously, Heritage Ottawa has been monitoring this situation, and has been calling for a more stringent rules to stop the problem of demolition by neglect.
