Ottawa Union Station and the Chateau Laurier at 100

Date: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 Time: 7:00 pm

Location: Ottawa Public Library Auditorium 120 Metcalfe St., corner of Laurier Ave. W.

Ottawa's downtown landmarks, the Chateau Laurier and former Union Station, (Government Conference Centre), are celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2012. A century earlier they repre- sented the expansion of the Grand Trunk Railway into the capital and across the country and brought to prominence a new Montreal architectural firm, Ross & MacFarlane/Macdonald, the largest in Canada by the 1930’s. Heritage Ottawa Vice- President David Jeanes, who has known both buildings since his youth and has studied them in great detail, particularly the Beaux-Arts station, will share his in-depth knowledge of these significant monuments.

Freiman’s Santa Claus Train

Date: Thursday, December 13, 2012 Time: 7:00 pm

Location: Woodside Hall, Dominion Chalmers Church 355 Cooper Street (parking and entrance on Lisgar Street, near O’Connor Street)

Ottawa’s premier department store, Freiman’s, operated the Santa Claus train from 1956 to 1967. Santa boarded the train, surrounded by children, at Vars, whose former station is now preserved at the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum. The arrival to a civic welcome at Union Station, followed by a parade down Rideau Street to Freiman’s was a major Ottawa event. Andrew Jeanes is a Culture Services Advisor at the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and studied heritage conservation under Herb Stovel at Carleton University’s School of Canadian Studies. He will present the story of this favourite Christmas tradition.
