Celebration of the 20th anniversary of Arts Court
Location: Arts Court Theatre, 2 Daly Ave.
Date and Time: Monday, September 15, 2008, 7:00 pm
The evening will feature joint presentations by Susan Annis, Vice-Chair, Ottawa Arts Court Foundation, Peter Honeywell, Executive Director, Council for the Arts in Ottawa, and Linda Balduzzi, Executive Director, Arts Court Foundation and will provide some insight into the workings of Arts Court, the centre of the Ottawa arts community and the hub of the city’s performing, visual, literary and media arts community and, since 1990, the home of Heritage Ottawa. A tour of the building and a reception will follow.
 
Masonry for Homeowners
Date and Time: Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 7:00 pm
Issues with masonry buildings can often be complex and involve expensive solutions. Masonry conservation specialist Keith Blades will explain how to diagnose problems accurately and find the appropriate remedial solutions to address the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms. In addition to finding the right solution, the selection of matching materials and a contractor sympathetic to heritage buildings are typical problems we all face.

Mixed Feelings: Ottawa's Concrete Architecture

Andrew Waldron, an architectural historian for Parks Canada specializing in the history of Canadian modernism, will present the history of modern concrete architecture in the national capital. Different views and opinions of the often-hated material will be examined and consideration given to the concept of concrete buildings as heritage buildings.
 
The Working Life of the Pearson Building

The Lester B. Pearson Building on Sussex Drive, first occupied in 1973, was purpose-built to house the Department of External Affairs with its range of protocol and hospitality, meeting and conference, communications and administration activities. James (Si) Taylor, a former Undersecretary of State for External Affairs, will lead this informal lecture and provide some highlights into how this unique architectural institution has worked in practice.
 
Heritage Ottawa’s 4th Annual Bob and Mary Anne Phillips Memorial Lecture:
Chairing World Heritage

In July 2008, Canada hosted the 32nd session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee in Quebec City, an event that coincided with celebrations of the 400th anniversary of this World Heritage city. Christina Cameron will recount her experiences as Chairperson of the session, highlighting its success stories, its challenges and the Canadian legacy of a new World Heritage Youth Forum.

A Green Primer for Heritage Conservation

What do storm windows, shady streets, and local farmers’ markets have in common? They are green ideas that we can still learn from. Susan Ross (OAQ, RAIC, LEED AP), a conservation architect dedicated to sustainability, will examine green ideas rooted in historic places, explain basic strategies for green conservation, and suggest other ways to explore these links.
 
Ontario Municipal Board: A tool for heritage conservation
Date and Time: Wednesday, April 15, 2009, 7:00 pm
Marc Denhez (lawyer and member of the OMB) and Herb Stovel (conservation architect, heritage activist, and Carleton University professor) will provide some background into the workings of the OMB, appropriate approaches in efforts to conserve Ontario’s heritage, and how to make the best use of heritage arguments in front of the Ontario Municipal Board.
